The Montessori Philosophy

The Montessori teaching philosophy was first developed by Dr. Maria Montessori at the turn of the century. The foundation of the philosophy is that every child develops at their own individual pace and level. Every child deserves to be treated with respect and provided choices and interesting alternatives with which to develop their learning potentials and encourage character building, confidence, and leadership.

Below are some basic concepts and core areas of concentration that are closely followed within the Montessori Method of teaching.

The Prepared Environment

Montessori classrooms are prepared in advance based on observations of the students’ individual needs. They include student-centered lessons and activities.

Active Learning

Montessori lessons are hands-on and active. Students discover information for themselves.

Ample Time

In the Montessori classroom, children work on lessons as long as need be, and interruptions are avoided whenever possible.

The Teacher’s Role

Montessori teachers act as guides and consultants to students on a one-on-one basis. They assist each child along his or her own learning path.

Age Groups & Grade Levels

In Montessori schools, “grade levels” are flexible and determined by the child’s development range (i.e. 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12, 12-15, and 15-18 years of age).

Adaptable Curricula

Montessori curricula are not pre-determined and instead expand and change in response to the students’ needs.

Individual Pacing

The individual child’s work pace is honored and encouraged in the Montessori classroom.

Self-Made Self-Esteem

Montessorians understand that a child’s self-esteem comes from an internal sense of pride in his or her own accomplishments.

For the Love of Learning

Montessori curricula are intended to appeal to a child’s innate hunger for knowledge. Children learn to love learning.

Classroom Subjects

The daily routine of the child relies heavily on their own individual interests and choices. The teacher closely supervises to ensure that, over an extended period, each child is exposed to all essential areas of the curriculum in the classroom.
